Bògòlanfini is a traditional textile practice from Mali, created through a mud-dyeing process on handwoven cotton cloth.

The name comes from the Bamana language:

bògò — mud
lan — by means of
fini — cloth

Mudcloth.

Patterns are formed through a process of dyeing, painting, and fermentation, where natural materials interact over time to produce depth of color. Clay, plant extracts, and natural binders are applied by hand, creating compositions unique to each cloth.

Its patterns carry cultural meaning and have historically been used to communicate identity, protection, and story through design.

This piece highlights the relationship between color and process. Yellow tones emerge through variations in application, oxidation, and time, while lighter markings are created through resist techniques that reveal contrasting layers beneath.
