hat no. 4 - bōgōlanfini

$250.00

The intersection of nature, design, and storytelling through cloth.

Bōgōlanfini is a traditional textile practice from Mali, created through a mud-dyeing process on handwoven cotton cloth.

The name comes from the Bamana language:

bōgō — mud
lan — by means of
fini — cloth

Together: cloth made by means of mud.

Patterns are formed through a process of dyeing, painting, and fermentation, where natural materials interact over time to produce depth of color.

A mélange of clay, plant extracts, and natural binders, including gum arabic from the acacia tree, and leaves such as ngalama and n’peku, is used to create the patterns on the fabric.

Its patterns carry cultural meaning and have historically been used to communicate identity, protection, and story through design.

This piece reflects a traditional expression of the practice.

In this context, both pattern and color function as language.

Deeper black tones emerge through longer fermentation and repeated application. Lighter markings are created using plant-based resist and leaf-derived extracts to form the patterns.

Jagged white lines reference the bones of a snake, a motif associated with bravery.

The Bogolan Kasobané collective works to sustain and evolve this tradition, preserving its history while adapting it to contemporary expression.

In the Bamana language, Kasobané translates to “the prison is finished, we are free.”
This philosophy is reflected in the collective’s use of locally sourced, natural materials over industrial and synthetic alternatives.

Based in Bamako and Ségou, Mali, their work continues a lineage of making rooted in place.

Each cut is unique.
No two are the same.

Human-made.
Intentional design.
Slow by tradition.

This piece reflects that origin.

Silk-lined interior
Six-panel construction
Deep-cut fit: 11.5” x 7.5” x 4.25”
